Customer Review: Difficult to Maneuver
This is a beautiful toy w/quality construction. However, it is a toddler toy. My toddler, who is a very coordinated and efficient walker can never manage the right angle to activate the "flapping" feature on this toy. It's becoming a source of great frustration to him because he knows from my demonstrations what it is capable of, but is unable to accomplish it himself. I think by the time he's old enough to get the right angle consistently, the novelty of pushing toys will have worn off.

This is a beautifully made, old fashioned looking toy ... unfortunately, it's just not that easy to play with; as another reviewer noted, the wheels are very stiff, and it doesn't push easily. My son carried it around infrequently after we got it, but now it really just sits in the corner. It was a great prop for some portraits, though!

My granddaughter absolutely loves her polar bear! It makes sounds like a real polar bear cub. Its fur is so soft and the battery compartment is well padded so it's soft to hold too. I am very please with this toy. I would say however, had I not read the reviews prior to purchase I might have been a little annoyed with the mechanical noise but because I was aware of the complaints by other customers I knew what I was getting into. This is a toy my 3 year old requested and LOVES. He got it for Christmas and carries her around by the neck, talks to her, and loves her. He can turn her on and off by himself so he turns her off when he is sleeping and when he is having some quiet time watching the TV. When the toy is on and he is watching TV it is a little loud and I find it a little annoying but she is just as cute when she is off as when she is awake so it is fine. This was a hit with all the kids and the adults Christmas night because she is so cute. My nephew even got one after Christmas and he takes her everywhere as well. So far neither of them have had any mechanical problems. If we did, for my child, it would be worth it to exchange it in for another one.

Once again Elmo takes center stage at Christmas. Every year there's that one gift that everyone wants and is hard to find. A few years back it was "Tickle Me Elmo". Remember that one? Everyone just had to have it, though I have to admit I didn't see the attraction. Then, for the last couple of years, and it looks like again this year, it's the Wii. I remember back about 10 or 15 years ago it was Cabbage Patch kids. Then Beanie Babies. It's always something!

This year it looks like it's going to be Elmo Live! At least according to the early reports for Amazon and other experts. Elmo is talking, singing, joking in a brand new interactive way. Sesame Street has always been known for encouraging creative and entertaining play, and this toy is no different. He's designed for kids over 18 months of age, and despite one or two complaints, it looks like he's going to be a great gift.

He's kind of similar to Tickle Me Elmo in that he's an animated stuffed toy that talks. However, he's much more advanced in that his facial features and movements are quite lifelike. He's very cute and kids are enthralled with him. He does all kinds of things like blows kisses, asks for hugs, and says he loves you. He tells jokes, acts ticklish, and more.

Plus, he's very interactive. For instance, he'll ask for a hug then if he gets one he'll say "Thank you". Or he'll say he's ticklish and then if your child tickles him, he'll respond like he's being tickled. Kids feel like he's alive and their friend.

He comes with a little stool, and when he's sitting on it he actually crosses his legs. His mannerisms are extremely lifelike, and for the first time it really looks like he's talking when he moves his mouth.

Powering down is even fun. When Elmo hasn't been played with for a while, or if he's laid on his back he yawns and says he is tired. This is good because it helps him not go through batteries so fast.

A couple of tips about playing with Elmo. His adorable movements do sometimes make a slight mechanical sound, which can make what he says hard to understand at times. Also, if he's not on a hard surface he can fall down, but even then he asks for help in getting up and remembers his manners by saying thank you.

These toys are incredibly fun. They vibrate and make a loud sound when fired. Some light up too. They also look real and are actual size. My boys love them. Be aware, however, that they are made from cheap plastic and will break very easily. In the first day, the nozzle broke off the machine gun. A week later, the butt broke off. Although I was able to tape them back on, the boys eventually pulled them off and thought the gun was pretty cool without the butt or the nozzle.

The guns have a lot of lights and sounds and are generally fun. Unfortunately, they are made of extremely cheap plastic and are not at all durable. 2 of the 4 broke in the 1st couple of hours (kids are 4 and 7). A week later, only 1 works (barely). Also, there is a switch to turn the sound off, but it did not work on any of the guns - so as you can imagine, they have a very high "annoyance factor" for the parents. So in the end - $40 down the drain. There are better choices out there.

Bakugan toys have become one of the top toys that kids want over recent months. They are based on the popular Japanimation series "Bakugan Battle Brawlers" which is about a group of kids that battle in duels using cards and monsters from another dimension called Vestroia in order to save the universe.

The toys were created through a joint effort between Sega Games and Spin Master and follow the concept of the cartoon very closely. The cards used in the game feature characters from the TV series just like the actual toys, which are basically spheres that when rolled over the cards pop open to reveal the battle brawler.

Like its predecessors Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon, it is also a collectible card game that utilizes the marble concept as well. Each player takes turns attempting to stand one of their spheres onto the magnetic gate cards. While the cards are collectible, it is the toy spheres that kids are after. There are over 75 different kinds at this point and more to be released in the future as the popularity of the game increases.

The rules to the game are very simple, and easy for any kid to understand after watching the cartoon series. Each player sets out a gate card at the beginning of their turn and then rolls one of their Bakugan in an attempt to get it to stand on a card. If they miss then it is the other player's turn. If a player can land two of his spheres on a card then the card is taken into that player's possession. If each player gets one of their battle brawlers on the same card then a battle ensues. The players then turn over the card and add the appropriate G points to their brawler's G points to decide who wins. The winner captures the card. The first player with three cards wins the match.

The game is very simple to learn to play, and is a lot of fun. Other rule variations can be used when playing as well. This is a neat concept but it needs something... My daughter loves it and carries it around in her purse all the time. we have lost a couple of the face plates so we can't talk with some of the princesses any more. maybe that is what it needs a small carrying case that is attached to the back of the phone. but it's fun and everyone here get a kick out of talking with the princesses!

I am surprised to see that this item still works 2 years later, even with the same batteries. I just cant find all the darn covers. Not that it matters. She only likes Cinderella anyway. But its a very great product and very durable. My lil one thinks shes a diva on her phones. Too bad there is more options of phones now for kids. I think she owns ever princess phone ever made. If I had to buy this again as a flip phone or even a blackberry(sidekick) style. I would get it in a heartbeat.

My husband and I have 5 children. When you have this many kids in the house, you've got to be creative with ways to entertain them. Here's a great idea that will get the whole family involved!

During the summer, my husband got our oldest 4 involved in a Pirate Treasure Hunt. The kids loved this role play activity and we did it about 3 times the first day. Here's what we did.

First, we drew a rough map of our house on a piece of paper. Then we labeled each room. We used names like: Ocean of Lost Souls, Waste Land, Land of Tomorrow, Land of Nightmares, Dungeon of Doom, Land of Milk and Honey, Cave of Night, Mountain of Gold.

Then we cut the map into four randomly shaped pieces. On each there was an arrow showing where to go next and a clue. These were, for example, "Search for 3 gold coins." Then, we hid three of the map pieces with coins in the rooms indicated on the map. The fourth map piece was given to the appointed Captain of our Pirate Crew.

We also invented a series of scenarios to occur in each room. As we entered we rolled a dice to determine which scenario we would encounter. Here are some examples:

Room #1:
1. A trip wire is crossed. Your crew has 5 minutes to finish the entire mission or you are trapped forever.
2. Nothing happens.
3. A giant snake attacks. Roll 6 or you loose your crew.
4. If anyone spoke when you entered the room, you woke up spiders. Roll a 6 and you'll be trapped.
5. Nothing happens.
6. Nothing happens.

Room #2:
1. A sea monster takes a crew member captive. Choose which member.
2. Nothing happens.
3. A wart-faced hog creature sword fights your leader.
4. Nothing happens.
5. A pack of wolves eat a crew members unless you avoid rolling a 1.
6. A small squid-like creature attaches itself to a crew member. Roll once in all remaining rooms for a 6.

Room #3:
1. A crew member is attacked by a giant flesh eating vine and is rescued by your leader.
2. Nothing happens.
3. Big spiders attack your leader. He's rescued by a crew member.
4. Nothing happens.
5. Walking skeletons attack. Roll a 6 and you never escape.
6. A talking frog shows you the way to your clue.

Each crew member was then given a weapon (make believe or toy) and a flashlight or lantern. We each dressed up in some way as a pirate. Then we drew the blinds, turned off the light and began our adventure. As we moved into the first room, my husband pulled out a dice and had the Pirate Captain roll it. We acted out the scenario indicated by the Captain's roll of the dice, then continued on our adventure. At the end, we found a treasure chest of gold.

This pretend play idea can be improvised and adjusted to fit your children's preferences, or you can use it just as listed above. Either way, I hope your kids love it as much as ours do.

I live in a suburban, upper-middle class neighborhood in Southern California. The community is made up of high one-income families, full-time dual income families and lots of stay-at-home moms with "side income". It is hard not to generalize but I am sure most adults in the area are college educated, many with graduate degrees, as you can see by the number of UCLA and USC license plates frames on SUVs. I am not sure what class I missed in college, but it seems many parents had some training in "Your Kids Have To Take AP courses And Other College Equivalents As Early As Possible To Succeed In Life." And my question is simply "Is Kindergarten The New College Prep?"

A few months ago I learned that my high-schooler was no longer striving for a 4.0 grade point average. She is competing against what seems like the majority of students in her school who are taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses that earn them a 5.0, or an extra grade unit towards college. In order to get into the University of California system or other highly competitive universities, a 4.0 is not good enough. Not only are these kids earning that 5.0 grade point average, but there are many classes they can take that will qualify towards their lower division requirements for college so that when they enter college, they already have units. And to make this even worse, there are some high schools in the area that actually graduate high school students with an Associates Degree, passing the first two years of college in high school.

So if high school students are taking their first two years of college in high school, will junior high students be taking high school classes in junior high? If this is the case, then elementary students will be taking the junior high curriculum during first through sixth grade, leaving my incoming Kindergartener to start calculus and chemistry in Kindergarten. I guess my sister-in-law, pregnant with my nephew due in May should start registering for college prep-Kindergarten classes now before the "list" gets too long.

On Boston Legal recently, a case was presented to the court regarding a high school student who had fallen asleep at the wheel of her car and died out of exhaustion from a mixture of too many Advanced Placement courses and extra-curricular activities. As if this fictional television program always seems to mirror real life, it is unfortunate that possibly somewhere in this country, this actually happened. Or maybe in some writers head, they see this as a possible direction that their child or their friends' child is heading. Perhaps this could actually happen to a family I know? I shudder at the thought.

My approach to parenting and the education of my children is vastly different than most moms I know. In fact, at a breakfast date this morning with several moms I've known since our children were small, I mentioned that a local high school was changing its' focus and encouraging its' students to have fun, explore options and possibly strive for a Junior College before heading for a University. One of the moms piped in and told the group that the high school I was referring to was actually a school for athletes, implying that our high school must have all the "serious" students.

I am not happy that my 3rd grader gets frustrated with assignments because she is being pushed so hard to practice the different genres of writing. My wish for her and my other children is that they have positive educational experiences rich with learning, studying, exploring, and understanding where they feel prepared not just for college but to live an independent life where they know not only about history, English and mathematics, but how to balance a checkbook and prepare simple nutritious meals. My tenth grader was offered a schedule this past semester that included too many difficult courses. My husband contacted the school to find out if this schedule could be changed. After speaking with her counselor, we realized that they put all the kids on the University requirement path unless otherwise specified. They do not mention to the average student that they have the opportunity to take, should they pass on the honor and A.P. tract, or finish their High School requirements early, say cooking or tech. In fact, they do not offer tech class, the class the kids learn keyboarding, introductory computer programming and even Photoshop, to students unless they are struggling in other classes. So many kids are ready for University but are not exposed to cooking or typing, the two things they are REALLY going to need to survive in college. Perhaps cooking and tech should be offered as A.P. courses so that those 5.0 students see that these classes are even available.

Why do we need college graduates who are not even allowed to vote? Are these kids mature enough to handle making tough decisions about finance and interpersonal relationships at twenty years of age? When do they get to have fun, rebel a little and learn about what interests them when they are barely out of puberty? I am not sure what the answer is. Perhaps we need to help the schools to realize that the test scores and the statistics about how many graduates go straight to Harvard are not all that matters. Maybe we need to follow up on these kids through college and into their 30's and 40's to find out if pushing them so hard during their childhood really produces more successful and happy adults.

A good choice for this would be a ping pong ball or something similar which bounces nicely. A soft, stuffed toy the same size as your kitten is also good. This lets kitty wrestle with it, closely simulating the way young kittens play with each other. Encourage play with this wrestling toy when your kitten starts to play rough.

You need to keep things under control. Set up 3 or 4 consistent times everyday to play with your kitten. This conditions your kitten so that it knows not to bother you at other times.

When playing with your cat, do not encourage it to chase after your hands and feet. This can also cause play aggression. In addition, if your cat tries to play with you outside your scheduled playtimes, you should ignore it. Otherwise it will start ambushing you when you climb down the stairs, or go around a corner, or when you go to bed. That would be an accident waiting to happen.

Sometimes, just ignoring kitty does not help. In this case, try using some kind of noise maker. You just want to startle it, grab its attention and break its momentum just before it pounces on you. Never physically strike your cat. A painful strike will make your cat afraid of you and avoid you. On the other hand, a harmless strike will just encourage it to continue its behavior. Either way, this is not what you want.

To enjoy playtime with your cat, you need to contain its aggression. Follow these tips consistently and with patience, and you will be able to have fun playing with your cat.

I purchased this set for just over $15 which I think was a great deal. It comes with a lot of sand toys and my son loves them. My only complaint is that one of the rakes broke within a couple days from using it in slightly wet sand but since it came with two it didn't really matter. Bought this for my 2 kids to put all of their smaller toys in. Very easy to put together, probably took a total of 10 mins. Very sturdy plastic and the railway integrated on top of the lid is also awesome, because they have thomas the train toys that can go with it. It's a decent size not to big and not to small plus the pouches on the side can hold stuffed animals, and smaller toys. My only complaint with it, is that the lid doesn't click into place, it just rests on top. (so you can flip it upside down for the train track) Other than that it's easy for the kids to open and close. Good toy chest for a decent price, would recommend to anyone with kids w/lots of toys!

Radio controlled cars, or R/C cars, are a model car powered through a radio control system or remote control. A transmitter, with either a joystick or a wheel with a trigger, sends inputs to the vehicle's internal receiver. The receiver transmits the signals or instructions to the electronic speed controller, causing the wheels to move or turn. There are simple ones available that just stop and go. And there are advanced models that are specifically built for competitive racing.

There are usually two categories of radio controlled cars: toy cars or hobby cars.

Toy vehicles

Toy models are the pre-assembled vehicles found in the most common discount store or retail store. These are usually the ones referred to as merely a kid's play thing. This is the cheaper type, about $50-$100 cheaper than the hobby models. They're easy to operate and relatively safe. They usually resemble real autos and have specific features that most hobby models don't have, including working lights, sounds, windows, doors and hoods that open and interiors that look like the real thing. Some even have radios and MP3 players included in the coupe.

They do, however, suffer from poor design, construction and performance. Once broken, the spare parts needed are not available to fix it. Motors are usually weak, since it's powered by cheap alkaline or Ni-Cad batteries. This usually gives them a maximum speed of about 10 to 15 mph. Steering only follows three directions, straight, full left and full right, and two speeds, fully stopped and full power. These automobiles are limited to on road use only. There are ones that are being advertised for use off road but usually deliver a minimal performance. The industry is constantly coming out with new types, but honestly for a child this car is the best buy for your money.

Hobby Cars

There are two kinds of hobby automobiles: nitro-powered models and gas-powered. Nitro-powered offers several speeds: maximum power, medium and a slightly slower speed. A nitro-powered engine is powered by fuel and may be refueled and back to action in a matter of seconds. These cars are air cooled and you do not have to worry about having to take a break for the car to cool down. Nitro-powered operates similar to a full-sized fuel vehicle and in turn, with the exhaust containing more unburned oil, coats the chassis, which will need lots of cleaning.

Cleaning is relatively easy, with just an air blower and some alcohol. But to be able to maximize the potential of the hobby radio controlled car, proper maintenance is needed. Mechanical wear is also more likely with nitro-power because it can be driven for a longer period of time. Higher speed collisions are also more likely because of the ability to maximize the vehicle's speeds. But always remember, because of its strong design and components, nitro-powered models are more durable than its electric counterparts.

Gas-powered automobiles run using pre-mixed gasoline and oil. They're more expensive than nitro-powered and electric automobiles, with a retail price ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. They're bigger and needs more space to operate freely. They don't have very fast speeds but they do have high power and uses less fuel to run. The also require less tuning and last longer than the nitro-powered radio controlled automobiles and electric vehicles. While both great buys, beware: you must operate with caution. Always read the manuals provided and supervise children playing with such devices.

Is it durability? Easy maintenance? Price? Design? All these factors have to be considered carefully before you can decide what kind of radio controlled cars you should buy.

Are YOUR Stuffed Animals DIRTY?

Stuffed animals and dollies can lead a hard life, if they're loved. Whether they sleep with you, tag along to play dates or Day Care, play hide and seek in the back yard, or just cuddle up by the TV sharing your snacks, they can really get dirty. Even the ones we "grownups" have out for "show" will eventually get dusty.

If you're collecting your animals as an investment, by all means protect them, take good care of the swing tags, and don't wash them.

But for the rest of us, who love on our plush pals, here are some suggestions on how to get them clean.

There are symbols on the tush tag of many toys that tell you how to clean that toy. They typically indicate if it can be washed, the temperature for the wash water, if it can be bleached, and if it can be machine dried.

If it can be machine washed, the best way we have found is to put it in a pillow case and tie a loose knot in the end. Run it through the washing machine on gentle cycle in cold water, with detergent, but no bleach. We use dye-free and scent-free Tide. We then place the stuffed animal on a large absorbent towel to dry. Occasionally, there will be a need to pre-treat an area of soil, for which we use Shout. Sometimes we find a plush lovey with just a little light soil from being on a shelf. In that case, I usually hand wash it with mild dishwashing liquid and let it air dry.

We do suggest that you wash any toy that you intend to allow a young child to play with.

Customer Review: Our Plan Toaster's Toast!
I'll go ahead and review this, even though I sent ours back the same day it arrived. The only educational value I can see in this item is that it closely mimics the way you would use an actual toaster...however, to be fair, that's about all I think is reasonable to expect out of any play toaster. I gave this toaster low marks for being fun because the toast and toaster slots are actually really tiny and my daughter wouldn't be able to "toast" any of her other play food - pop-tarts, bread, bagels, etc. How fun is it, really, to "toast" the same pieces of wooden bread over and over because that's all that fits in your play toaster? I do think the toaster appeared to be well-made (in Taiwan, I believe) and seemed sturdy. For the money, I found a much cuter, vintage looking toy toaster with bigger slot openings at a popular children's retail store (rhymes with "Ottery Yarn Bids"). To each his own, I guess...

Children appreciate both new and old toys. Boys love wooden trains and cars while girls like dolls. The parents do their best to provide or give what is best for their kid even though it means sacrificing extra cash. However, you can still give them what they want for a cheaper price. Your children can play with many toys out there. You just need to know where to find them and if they allow haggling, haggle away. Do not be shy to do this because you might get the item at an even cheaper price.

Electrical toys are gaining popularity because it does everything for you. Children love remote controlled toys or RC toys are because with a touch of a button, the toy immediately follows your command. The remote needs two AA batteries; when you see that you have drained batteries, changing them is not so hard. In order to play with the toy longer, make sure to operate in a space that no one can reach it or step on it. More so, supervise the child when playing with it so avoid any accidents from happening.

Still some children prefer playing with wooden trains because they can do whatever they want to do with it. In addition, the toy will not leave his or her side since it has no mechanism or outside force to make it happen. When kids put pressure on the trains this is the only time that it will move. Another advantage of playing with such is there are no tiny parts that the children can possibly swallow. Wooden toys are usually big are glued or nailed together. It too has a smooth finish wherein children and parents need not to worry about wounding themselves by playing with it.

Little girls play with pretend cooking utensils and the likes. Many toys are available that the girls can choose from but they still prefer to play with plastic kitchenware. They imagine themselves being mothers and cooking for their families. They too pretend that they have a restaurant or food chain wherein people sit and dine there. They use stuffed toys and other dolls to seem that they have company or customers. If a chance passes them to play with the other kids, they do not have a hard time playing with them.

Nevertheless, children have their own opinion of playing with wooden trains or electric ones. It is still best to ask your kid what he likes so that when you buy him one, you will get the right one. Sometimes, children throw tantrums when you give him a toy that he does not like. To avoid this, you can also bring him to the toy store if he chooses only the one that he likes and the one that he will really play with. Talking to the kid and telling him what he needs to do when they arrive at the toy store helps the child ready himself for the trip.

When we are bored we look for tons of things to do. Sometimes we end cleaning the whole house and make it spic and span. Otherwise, we go out for a long walk in the park, cook and do just about anything to keep you busy. It's not really that hard to find something to do. But it is better to do something that could further make you intellectually endowed.

You may find this quite unusual but there are toys that you could use when all the chores are done. And mind you, this toy has been known to develop one's spatial and creative intellect. Have you ever heard of jigsaw puzzles? Yes, these are toys not only used by kids but adults too. They are good remedy for boredom. When you are alone and you have nothing to do, you can pick up a jigsaw set and give yourself a brand new challenge. Although, sometimes these puzzles can be so elementary, you can go out and buy the ones that are far challenging to put together. You can pick the double-sided puzzles to give an added challenge that way you can develop your strategic skills. You can even test how clever you are especially when they have complicated designs.

If you want to add more challenge, consider the number of pieces of your jigsaw puzzle. Personally, I'd like to try those with 300 pieces or more. Before when I'm out buying toys, I usually buy the 50-piece set and those that don't go beyond a hundred. It is quite funny that I never took the challenge of going beyond that because I knew I would give up easily. When playing with these sets, you really have to know the picture and their minute details. This would mean having a keen eye to quickly recognize the pieces that could fit together.

The toy itself can work wonders for oneself. Jigsaw puzzles can give you the sense of fulfillment. It gives you the same feeling when you have finished cleaning the whole house or after you have finished doing the laundry; only difference is that you don't have to use your muscles. It gives you the feeling of relief and the sense of accomplishment. You also do not have to worry about time because you own it. And if you cannot finish it today, you can do it some other time when boredom kicks in. It is a continuous process. But it is really up to you. Remember, you control the challenge.

Jigsaw puzzles maybe hard but anyone could do it. To tell you, you can develop your values in here as well. When handling difficult puzzles, it takes time. And if you really want to finish it, patience is needed, as well as perseverance. You can't rush things when they are too hard to handle. And in this game you cannot cheat. Once you have scattered and jumbled the pieces, there's no way of putting it back unless you have figured out which piece fits to another.

I'm sure right now, you are very curious if you can live with the challenge of the jigsaw puzzles. If you are the type of person whose really bored and just wants to find something to do without requiring burning to much energy, this could be your solution. Just make sure, to set your goal or you might end up being hopeless and kicking the pieces out because of its difficulty. You can definitely try out and discover it for yourself.
